Useful information for implementing ASME Section VIII Div.1

useful-information-implementing-ASME- Section-VIII

ASME

  • ASME establishes rules for new construction of pressure vessels that will perform in a safe & reliable manner.
  • ASME also interprets these rules when questions arise regarding their intent.
  • Code does not address all aspects and those not addressed should not be considered prohibited.
  • Code does not fully address tolerances.
  • Code is not a design handbook, designer must use engineering judgement consistent with Code philosophy which do not overrule mandatory requirements of the Code.

ASME section viii div.1 manufactuirng

  • Unit under Section VIII Div.1 must be built in a shop with an accredited quality control program.
  • For this purpose the Quality Control Manual need to be created.
  • It covers the construction of the U and UM pressure vessels meeting the requirements of the ASME Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII Div. 1.
  • All the stages of manufacturing that require inspection or examination must be sign off and dating by QC personnel.
  • The stages are determined by the Inspection and Test Plan prepared by QCM or QE.
  • No work should proceed past any inspection points until they have been accepted and signed off by the QCI.
  • ITP consists the Hold Points column. Where AI mark by an ``H`` which function must be inspected by him.
  • No work should proceed past these hold points until they signed off by the AI and QCM.
  • If any stage of manufacturing doesn`t meet the requirements or specifications, the work has to be stopped and the part has to be tagged  with the “Hold” tag as nonconforming.

ASME section viii div.1 welding and WPS

  • All welders/welding operators must be qualified to applicable WPS’s to be used on code item and correct instructions are given to them prior to performing any welding.
  • The WPS's have to be registered with jurisdiction authorities.
  • The WPS’s to be used are specified on the shop drawing which are made available to the welding personnel.
  • All welding, including tack welding, shall be performed by welders or welding operators qualified to WPS’s.
  • The welders/welding operators have to have a unique identification number which shall be used to identify any welded joints made by them.
  • When stamping of identification is not feasible, then the Welding Manager shall keep a weld map which will record the welding operator used on each joint.
  • All tack welds performed by outside contractor shall be done by using a qualified welding procedure and will be removed prior to welding.
  • A Process Maintenance (Welder Log) will be maintained by the Welding Manager which will document WPS’s to which the welder is qualified and recorded on a monthly basis, as evidence that the welder used the process to maintain qualification.
  • The Welding Manager shall be responsible to control all welding material in storage and in use for proper handling, storage, applications, protection and distribution.
  • Welding gases shall be subjected to the same control as other welding materials and the Welding Manager shall ensure the gas cylinders and supply piping are properly identified.

ASME SECTION VIII DIV.1 INSPECTION AND TEST PLAN (ITP)

  • Shell courses are fitted up and check for proper alignment.
  • Nozzles and other fittings are laid out, holes cut, edges are beveled and nozzles and fitting are tack weld into place.
  • All weld joints, pressure retaining joints and attachment.
  • After final acceptance of the vessel by the AI, the QE or QCI shall complete the MDR and after certification shall present same to the AI.
  • The QE or QCI and the AI will check the nameplate stamping against the drawing
  • Any removable vessel parts must be identified by Vessel serial number.

ASME SECTION VIII DIV.1 Nonconformities

  • Nonconformities are those found during receiving, in process, final inspection, in material parts or documentation, which fail to meet the ASME Codes, jurisdictional, customer contract or these QC Manual requirements.
  • Should a nonconformity, as described above, be detected then the QCI shall identify the nonconforming item with a “Hold” tag and segregate the item, where size permits, to a “Hold Area” away from any other accepted items.
  • Material, parts and/or associated documentation deemed as “Rejected” shall be tagged with “Rejection” tag and segregated so they cannot be used for Code work.
